Forget Dietary Guidelines and Embrace "Food Rules"

As some of you may know, this week has seen the release of a brand new U.S. Government Dietary Guidelines report (see http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/07/health/2015-dietary-guidelines/).  I am not completely happy with the new report but there are some positive recommendations such as restricting sugar, embracing healthy fat, and eating more whole grains.  However, my concern is the confusion created for the majority of us who are just trying to figure out what to eat.  I mean am I actually expected to track the percentage of sugar in my diet?  Of course not. 

Michael Pollan, a journalist who writes about food and health has some pretty basic "food rules" to help everyone calm down and just eat real food.  If you missed it, PBS recently aired a documentary on Pollan's views called "In Defense of Food."  The show is really a must see for everyone concerned with the future of food and health in this country.

Here are some of my favorite "food rules" from Michael Pollan that should help make sense of all the nutritional confusion:

"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants". 

"If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant don't". 

"Never get your fuel from the same place your car does".

"Don't eat anything your Great Grandma wouldn't recognize as food".

"Eat only food that will eventually rot".

"The whiter your bread the sooner you'll be dead".

"Eat animals that have themselves eaten well".

"Stop eating before you are full".

And, of course break the rules once in a while.  "All things in moderation, including moderation".

So stop stressing about every nutritional component and just eat food.  Michael Pollan's Food Rules provide a pretty straightforward guideline for good health.  Watch the documentary and let me know what you think!  What was most surprising?  Did the show change how you feel about food?
